Where Do I Get Back links?

1.Your Own Sites

This is a nice easy step. If you are trying to get one of your sites to rank for a keyword and need backlinks, the best place to start is with any other sites you might own. Add a link to the site you want to rank for. Include the link on any blogs you might own or any other business sites you have.

You don’t have any sites?

Go to free blog sites like WordPress.com, Blogger.com and create blogs. Create a blog on these sites and post an article that relates to your business. Include an anchor text rich link to your website. Anywhere that offers you the chance to build a free website or blog is a potential link. (Create free blog sites)

2. Reciprocal Linking

Reciprocal linking has become kind of a taboo word in link building these days. Simply trading links with people is not nearly as effective as it once was. Google caught on to this practice and having a page full of links that gave you a link – will not help your rankings. That said, you can trade links with sites that will actually drive traffic to your site. In this case even if the reciprocal link won’t help for your search engine placement it is still worth trading if the site you are trading with is going to send significant traffic to your site.

3.Web Directories

The internet is full of hundreds (probably thousands) of online web directories where you can post your link. The first directory to worry about is http://www.dmoz.org This is by far the most powerful of the free web directories. The first step to any back linking campaign should include a submission to DMOZ.

http://www.dmoz.org/

Just follow their posted instructions (to the letter, they are picky). DMOZ is moderated by volunteers so it may take a long time for your link to get approved. Do not submit every week, submit and check back in 3-4 weeks and if your link isn’t there you can resubmit. The other directory that is powerful is the Yahoo Directory - this is separate from the yahoo search results.

Yahoo Directory & Best Of The Web are probably the main directories I would suggest you pay for as they have a very high page rank. However if you have a large budget it may be worth submitting to few directories with higher page ranks - The higher the directories page rank (PR) the better… look for directories with PR of 2 plus. Although expensive one good high PR back link will be very valuable to your SEO efforts. If you have the money, go for it. If you can’t justify the cost, you can ignore it for now.

There are a lot of directories out there and I think you are best off focusing on the hundreds of free ones. But do not over do directory submission & be selective with your directory choices i.e. if you are based in Swansea find local Swansea or South Wales directories to submit to.

Also it is best to try & gain two non-directory normal links for every directory link to balance your link profile.

A lot of these directories will ask for a reciprocal link – as stated above that is not a great trade off. You can ignore the ones that require a reciprocal link or you can set up a free Blogger blog and just throw the link up there. Most of them will accept this, but some will require a link from the domain you are submitting – ignore these sites and move on.

Here are a couple of the most effective web directories that you can submit to for a local search listing boost.

Free Directories
www.freeindex.co.uk
www.quelp.co.uk

Paid For Directories (Worth Paying For)
www.botw.org - PR6 – (Best Of The Web – 1st submission £99 pa & 2nd submission discount 20%)
www.uksmallbusinessdirectory.co.uk - PR5 – (£36)

These directories sometimes die, move to a paid situation or stop accepting new submissions – it is the nature of web directories. You can find relevant local directories by searching for free web directories in your area. Try searching for terms like ”free directories Swansea”

4: Blog Commenting

There are a plethora of blogs today and most of them offer you the chance to post comments. You can gain backlinks by leaving relevant comments that actually mean something. Much like forum posting this isn’t something to do recklessly. You need to actually read the blog posts you are commenting on and then drop a thoughtful response.

Creating the links on these blogs is pretty simple, when you are filling out the comment section “Your Name” will end up being the anchor text to your link. Some blogs will not allow people to put keywords as their name, but a lot do if the comment is well thought out.

Some blogs will also let you put an HTML link in the body of your comment, but usually only if that site is relevant to the discussion at hand. To find fresh blog posts, search twitter for “new blog post” and you will have enough to stay busy for awhile.

5 Social Media & Bookmarking

There is a whole world out there based on social interaction over the web that is primed for backlinks. It has probably become the most popular back linking method. First there are Social Bookmarking sites like Digg and Delicious that offer profiles which allow you to add a link, or have an about me section that allows you to place an HTML link.

You can google “social bookmarking sites” to find hundreds of sites that may allow you to place an anchor text rich link in your profile. There are also a ton of blogging or micro blog type sites out there.

Sites like Squidoo, Blogger, WordPress, com etc… offer people the chance to create a blog type web page. These blogs and pages can easily have links added to them that point to your site. If you use these sites, try to create some original content for each of them – even if it is a quick 250 word article.

Online profiles are one of the hottest places to get backlinks. Almost any site that has some sort of “community” offers a profile section that you can use to add a link. Facebook, Twitter & Linked In are all good places to build profiles with back links to your website.

In 2011 we saw the arrival of a a new social network called Google +… I strongly recommend you set up a Google + profile with back links to your site.

Links from Google + are ‘do follow links’ that can pass page rank to your site. In 2012 as search becomes increasingly more socially & semantically based the influence of Google + will become more important in search terms.

However this is not limited to a certain type of sites, basically any site you can create a profile on. I would suggest focusing on the high PR sites. For example a lot of newspapers offer user profiles. Other sources include forums like SEOMoz & 4Networking.com etc

6: Article Writing

Article writing can also give you decent back links. Just write an article on your topic and there is no shortage of sites to submit that article to. Most sites allow a link (or two) in the body of the article, but even if they don’t, they all offer a profile that you can get a link on and an author resource box that will be posted along with your article. The resource box can be a perfect opportunity to sell yourself or website…plus of course the ever valuable back link.

Some of the most popular article sites are:

http://www.ezinearticles.com

http://www.searchwarp.com

http://www.goarticles.com

You can also save all of your articles as PDFs (with anchor text rich backlinks in it) and upload to document sharing sites like Scribd and Docstoc.

7: Guest Blogging

Guest Blogging has become perhaps the most effective way in 2012 to get high quality white hat one way links
This involves submitting articles with links back to your site to a blog owner or syndicate who may host your article if its deemed newsworthy

Some popular guest blogging resource sites include

http://myblogguest.com/

Conclusion

If you want to get seen in your local search engine rankings , then these fours steps will ensure you do that.
Researching and picking a great local keyword (e.g Swansea Hotels). The key here to remember is to combine your location with your product and/or service.

Make sure your keyword is in your title tag. This is the first thing Google sees, it has to include your keyword.

Frequently updated websites are rewarded by Google. Remember that migrating your website to a WordPress platform, or adding a blog to an existing website is the easiest way to make your site dynamic. Google will reward you for fresh content.

Get Backlinks. You need to get back links to your website. Remember you want your keyword to be in your anchor linking text as much as possible. This is the golden rule for helping keyword terms rank well.

This is the third video posted July 31st, 2012 in the “Mastering Google Series” from SENuke’s Josh Bachynski.

Topics included this time are:

How to make good links

What makes a bad link

Safe guarding websites against a bad link penalty

Finding your bad back links

The unnatural link notice & solutions

How to clean up and de-indexed bad links

What I learnt from this video about creating a good natural link profile is that it is wise to mix up your keyword anchor text link phrases to have a mixture of about 30% exact match, 30% partial match & 30% generic.

Hence if “red apples” were exact match, then non adjacent keyword placement such as ”red and apples” would be a partial match and “click here for a great site about apples” would be generic match. Also it is prudent place such links in editorial content of 2 to 3 sentences, to make the links seem more natural. Moreover avoid placing them all of them on their own in your side bar or footer section of a website.

The most surprising thing recommended in this video is that it may not be wise to build back links to your root domain (www.mysite.com) anymore but to build them instead to a sub page (www.mysite.com/sub-page) of your website or to a 301 redirected page.

This is the concept of building in redundancy to your website so that if your rankings are effected by bad links in the future you can quickly dispose of that affected sub page without penalizing your whole website and its domain name in the long run.

Hence since the Google penguin updates on April 24th & May 25th, 2012 it may be prudent to build any future back links to disposable sub page.

A suitable sub page would be default.html, which can be made to mirror your sites homepage index.html

Step 1 – You would first copy the content of index.html to default.html making it a mirror home page

Step 2 – Put the the following in the header tags of default.html <link rel = “canonical” href =”index.html”>

The rel = “canonical” tag indicates to Google that the unique original copy of the website home page is index.html and avoids any page duplication penalty from Google. This practice is as good as linking to the root domain but you now have a removable page that can dropped if it is penalized in the future by any bad links, without effecting your root domain.

Moreover you could insert the following command line at the start of the htaccess file

Redirect 301 /default/ http://www.mywebsite.co.uk

This would create a 301 redirected page from the duplicate default page to the websites index or home page.

Josh also advises keeping a Google.com/alert out for anything John Mueller (JohnMu) says as he is employed by Google as a “Webmaster Trends Analyst” based in Switzeland.

Step Three: Fresh Content

Fresh Content is the way forward.

A “dynamic” website consists of some sort of regularly updated content. This is usually done by adding a blog to your website, or moving your site to a dynamic platform like WordPress (WP). Google values dynamic website more highly than static (rarely changing) websites. A website with fresh content is naturally more relevant and up to date, so Google awards higher rankings for them.

The easiest way to add a dynamic element to your website is to build it in WordPress in the first place. Conversely if yo have a website already you can also just add a WP blog to your current website. You should update your website as often as possible. A solution like WordPress with its dashboard makes this as easy as using a word processing program.

Step Four: Backlinks

What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks are the number one most important factor when you want your website to get to the top of Google searches. In the simplest terms, backlinks are links on the internet that point back to your site. The most effective backlinks have your chosen keyword as the anchor text. Anchor text is the actual text that people click to visit your site. When Google finds a link to your site that includes the keyword you want to rank for then it will boost that sites relevancy.

Many of the places you get links from will have a field for your web address as well as a field that is something like “Link Text” or “Link Title”. Whatever you put into those latter fields will become your “anchor text”.

So if you are trying to rank for “Swansea Hotels” that is what you would use. Sometimes though you will have to create it yourself. The most common ways to create anchor text links when back linking is through HTML

Here is how you create anchor text backlinks: HTML

<ahref=”http:/www.powebdesign.co.uk”>keyword goes here </a>

Top Tip – Do not concentrate on anchor text back linking for one particular phrase too much e.g. several hundred identical links or more. By varying your keyword anchor text in your back links it will look more natural to Google and avoid penalties for over optimization of the same keyword in your anchor text thousands of times.

Hence use keyword anchor text “Swansea hotel” as well as anchor text “staying in a Swansea Hotel” …this will make your link building seem more natural to Google and help avoid a penalty. Partial matches like the phrase “staying in a Swansea Hotel” will also count towards your ranking for the term “Swansea hotel.”

When a site is brand new submit your links more slowly (do not have hundreds or thousands of links appear overnight as this looks unnatural & you may incur a penalty from Google). However as your website ages say 6 to 12 months.. you can be more aggressive with your link building. After 2 years or more a domain is considered to be established and have more domain authority for SEO purposes than a younger domain.

Step One: Research

What Are Your Customers Searching For Locally ?

Since we are working on local search terms your research should be pretty simple.

All you need to figure out is “What do my customers search Google for ? ”

This search term will become your keyword e.g.. Swansea Jobs, Swansea Hotels, Swansea City Football Club..

Essentially it comes to a simple pattern, just combine your location (Swansea or Cardiff) with your product or service. If you have a hotel in Swansea then a pretty good start would be “Swansea Hotel”.

Once you have combined your locale with your product/service you can use Googles keyword tool to get an idea of how many people search for your term.

Make sure when you are using the ‘Google Keyword Adword Tool’ filters that you select an “Exact” keyword match and data only from the “United Kingdom“. This will allow you to get the correct volume of local searches not USA or broad searches.

As Google tends to over estimate so you need to divide this local search volume figure by three and only then do you have a fair idea of the amount of people looking “per calender month” for this search term in the UK

If search volumes for your local keyword terms are very poor you may try some of the other keywords that the ‘Google Adword Keyword Tool’ suggests from its list instead to drive traffic to your website

Once you have your “keyword” (your location + your product/service in most cases) then you are ready to optimize your website for local based searches.

Step Two: Meta Title Tag

The very first thing it sees is your Title Tag, which makes sense since it is as the very top of your website. The title tag is found at the top of your web browser in the blue bar.

It is pretty essential that this title tag has your keywords in it. It is the first thing Google sees and it is what Google will list your website as in their search engine snippet that appears on the results page

You have seventy characters to play within the “title tag” make sure you put the main keyword term or phrase you want to appear for at the start of the text in the title tag.

The position of the words in your title tag is important so place the ones you want to appear for the most furthest to the left at the start of your string of title tag characters

How Do I Change Title Tags ?

If you have your website powered by WordPress then you simply change your “Blog Title” to your keyword term You can change this in the dashboard of WordPress in Settings –> General. Moreover there are many WordPress plugins that allow you to control all the meta tags with the ”All in One SEO” Plugin is the most popular

If you are using a traditional HTML website then you will have to manipulate some source code. If you have a web designer they can probably do this for you in a couple of minutes. Either way you will have to edit the title tag in your header (usually with web editing software package such as Macromedia Dreamweaver)

Somewhere in between the <head> and </head> tags will be <title></title> tags, just put your keyword between those tags and you are all set.

If you remember one thing from this guide please remember this - The main on page elements of your website that really matter to Goggle are your title tags, your domain name and its age & your URL Structure. The rest is all down off site issues such as building incoming links to your website.

Also bare in mind since Google’s Penguin update in April 2012, page topic content relevant to your page title tags & incoming back links from topic related relevant websites have become a more important quality signal to Google.

A well placed keyword at the start of the title tag characters carries most importance in terms of a websites on page ranking factors

Domain names should include your keywords hence www.swanseahotels.co.uk would be your best choice for a website about hotel accommodation in Swansea.

Moreover a domain name does not reach it full weight with search engines until it has been active as a live website for 1 to 2 years. Hence get your website up & running quickly & improve it as it ages.

Your URL Structure is you web address and including keywords in it is helpful to getting your site well ranked. Hence www.swanseahotels.co.uk/gower-accommodation would be a good choice for hotel accommodation on the Gower near Swansea.

Below under the heading “SEO Tactics that Never Stop Working” is an excerpt from Ruth Burr’s first post as the new Lead SEO at SEOmoz in 2012.

In my personal experience to date of keeping my website www.swimmer.co.uk at the top of its niche for “waterproof mp3 players, cases & headphones” for the past 6 years by just using good onsite SEO …I totally agree with Ruth’s recommendations.

That’s not to say that onsite SEO alone is enough to get you to the top of Google these days but its certainly a solid basis that seems to stand the test of time with Google’s updates to date & works at its best when combined with subject related back link building

SEO Tactics that Never Stop Working

Find the terms that people are using to search for your products, and then talk about your products on-site using those terms, without using them so much you sound crazy.

Make sure a search engine can find every page on your site, read the content and figure out what the page is about (i.e. what keywords it should rank for).

Fix the broken stuff on your site, remove duplicate content and make the whole site architecture faster.

Create interesting, relevant, fresh content that is designed to engage users and encourage them to share it with others.

Build links to your site from other high-authority sites with which you share a topic or audience – better yet, build relationships with those sites that can earn you links again and again.

Make sure you’ve got a good experience for users once they get to the site: the content they see is the content they want.

I have been reading about a product called “SENuke” (aka SEO Nuke) for link building. It is apparently one of the best automated link building tools of its kind. It can be combined with other automated software like “best spinner” for article rewriting & “scrapebox” for researching & collating website data, making it a fast & efficient method for creating web copy & back links, albeit back links for link sake only and not back links that would generate much natural web traffic.

SENuke (SEO Nuke) is used by a lot of Black Hat SEO’s… but it need not be used in a egregious way. I came across this video on SE Nuke’s attitude towards the Google Penguin update, it is interesting in that its so different from the current consensus view on Google’s Penguin & Panda.

In this video Josh Bachynski of SENuke offers us the theory that Penguins target is less about weeding out bad back links & more about pruning spam filled pages that help to deliver back link juice to your money website

However this theory this doesn’t quite explain away the “First Report Of Google Penguin Recovery” via @sengineland I tweeted about a few days ago

But Josh of SENuke backs up his hypothesis by saying any divergent evidence may be down to Google’s Penguin update using a Baysian filter. This is based on a Baysian probability theory that gradually learns from new data & turns a subjective theory into a rational one based on gathering ongoing evidence…or at least that’s as much as I can understand of a definition of Baysian Theory from Wikipedia

UPDATE JULY 2012

The latest video from Josh about dealing with Penguin & having an SEO strategy in July 2012. Issues addressed include

Three different ways to fix websites affected by Penguin

Leaks from SMX advanced Conference

Results of an Josh’s own experiment into Penguin backlinks

Generic anchor text and possible benefits of using the author snippet tag

SEO guidelines from Google for 2012

Finally for an informed discussion from users who have tried out the ‘SENuke’ software package in a bid to see if it is useful for building quality links that stand the test of time & Google updates & possible penalties… then see this SEOMoz discussion

One of the participants in this SEOMoz debate makes a valid point …

“For example writing an unique non-spinned article (with pictures, embedded videos,… if possible) and then use SE Nuke also for this article…The good thing is these links get deleted right away or they last a very long time… Right now i believe that people that are only using low-class spun link building techniques are totally wrong, as well as people that don´t use it based on a “white hat-principle.”
